Break out the celebratory leis: Aug. 21 marks 50 years since President Eisenhower signed the proclamation that made Hawaii the 50th U.S. state. In honor of the Aloha State's first half-century, here's a look at some of Hawaii’s top sights, as well the most iconic cultural treasures it’s contributed to the nation.

Waikiki Beach: For many visitors to Hawaii, a vacation starts right here on the sands separating Honolulu from the Pacific Ocean. A playground for Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s, Waikiki has been a prime tourist destination for well over 100 years. The ocean is warm and shallow for quite a distance away from shore, making this a perfect spot for water sports for beginners and experts alike.
